The Red Lion in the village of Martlesham lies about eight miles from Ipswich. Historically the pub dates back to the late 1500’s although the earliest recorded licensee was Robert Whitbread in 1712. Located on the Norwich to London road this Coaching Inn was used as an overnight stopover for the Royal Mail with the post being safely locked up until the morning. The figurehead was a well known landmark with “Red as the Martlesham Lion” being a common expression in the area. The original figure is still outside the pub today. Nowadays, this destination food house is a most popular venue with the local community as well as travellers from further afield. It has retained much of its olde worlde character with the old oak beams and two open fireplaces maintaining its traditional ambience. Like all Chef & Brewer pubs we employ high quality Chefs who have superb kitchen facilities. The food can be chosen from a main menu, snack menu or unique Specials from the chalk boards which allow our Chefs to show their flair. We very often also have a special menu offering fixed price meals. You will be served meals which have been prepared from the freshest of ingredients and cooked to order. Food can be enjoyed in the air conditioned restaurant, al fresco in the garden or on the patio in the summer sunshine. There is table service for all. To complement your meal there is an extensive choice of quality wines or real ales and other drinks are available at the bar. Next time you come to the area, be sure to make this Red Lion the venue for your next meal. You are guaranteed a fine welcome.
